This summer was one of the hottest and driest years in Europe. It caused fires and destroyed farmers' crops. Yet it brought one great discovery. Discover 5 000 years old megaliths arranged in a circle that were previously hidden under water.

5000 years old megaliths resembling Stonehenge

"The stones, which date back to the second and third millennium BC, are located on the banks of the Tagus River. It thus forms the temple of the Sun. The locals last saw the rocks six decades ago before the area was flooded. "

Many compare the discovery of these mysterious stones with the old Druid Temple in Stonehenge, UK. A collection of 144 stones, some of which are two meters high and have serpent engravings, are arranged in circles. But as with Stonehenge, it is not clear who put them there and for what purpose.

Megaliths in Spain

Angel Castaño, part of the Raíces de Peralêda Cultural Association, noted:

This stone cluster was created using granite transported miles away. As with Stonehenge, the stones form a temple and burial ground. They seem to have a religious but also an economic purpose. They are located in one of the few places where it is possible to cross the river. The site could also serve as a trading venue. The fact that there are carved snakes on the stones is also important. They represent the dragons that protect the treasure, they are the guardians of the sacred zone.

Who built these megaliths?

So who built this magnificent cluster of megaliths? Scientists believe it may have been the Celts who lived in Iberia about 5 000 years ago.

Unfortunately, it is a race against time. Soon the rain will come again and the temple will probably be under water again. Castaño and other scientists are trying to figure out a way to prevent this hiding. If scientists fail to figure out a way to protect the stones, it could take years to be discovered. Given their condition (stones are of granite and already show signs of erosion and cracking), it is important to protect the stones before it is too late.
