In 1980, the Zahi Hawasse team uncovered a passage located under the outer shell of the Sphinx lining. Hawass was informed of this by two senior workers who worked with Baraiz. This tunnel was never officially documented and was subsequently forgotten.

The passage is located on the north side near the tail and has two parts that are at right angles to each other. One part drops sharply and after about 4 meters ends in a dead end. The second - the upper part is about the same length and ends in a small niche, which is 1 meter wide and 2 meters high.

A large amount of limestone shards in the sand was found here, as well as pieces of charcoal. Furthermore, fragments of ceramics, pieces of plaster, granite, part of a modern jug, another fragment of red granite and two old but modern shoes.

Shora hole to the Sphinx

Shora hole to the Sphinx

Perhaps the author of this hole in the Sphinx is alone the great Egyptologist Vyse, who once wrote in his diary that he was bored near the shoulder and tail. He has not passed the specification.

There is one more desired trapdoor that has been installed in the space between the front paws behind the Thutmose IV stele and the Sphinx's chest. This is not directly the entrance to the Sphinx, but a shaft that was covered with a cement roof with a hatch, which I placed Baraize as part of an attempted reconstruction in the 20s.

There is another shaft, located near the Sphinx. Although it is not directly connected to the Sphinx, it is located in the area of the hind paw closer to the northern ledge.

The passage is 1,37 meters by 1,07 meters and the adjoining shaft is 1,83 meters deep. A large piece of basalt was found in the shaft, which was smoothed in one part.

It is believed that space could be intended as a tomb, but it was never completed.
