Drugs or a handkerchief? What were Macron, Merz and Starmer (not) hiding from the cameras?

In May 05.2025, a short video began circulating on the Internet, showing French President Emmanuel Macron in the company of two other European leaders – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The video, taken during their train trip to Ukraine, provoked a wide range of reactions. Not because of their political statements, but because of the unusual behavior these men demonstrated in front of the cameras. What exactly happened and why is it resonating so much in the public space?

The video that sparked a wave of speculation

In the video, we see three statesmen sitting down at a table right in the middle of the train. The camera follows their arrival, and although each of them looks straight at the lens, not one of them looks at the table at first. This is quite unusual in itself – in everyday reality, most people instinctively check the space where they are sitting. This does not happen here. Their attention remains focused on the camera.

After sitting down, a series of subtle but coordinated gestures ensue. Macron and Merz suddenly cover an area on the table with their palms—as if there is something there that should not be seen. Macron then moves his hand to the inside pocket of his jacket, and the object disappears from view.

Handkerchief or cocaine?

The French presidential palace later issued a statement that it was a crumpled handkerchief. This version would be easy to believe if the behavior of all the actors were not so unnaturally tied up. If it were really just a handkerchief, we would expect a calm gesture: a look at the table, a hand to the object, lifting it and putting it in the pocket. But nothing of the sort happens. Instead, we observe an overly formal posture, prolonged looks at the camera, and a nervous hand covering the area of the table.

Speculation immediately arose on the Internet that it could have been envelope with drugs, perhaps cocaine. This theory was later ridiculed by the French and foreign media, which is entirely to be expected. The mainstream media tend to be tightly connected to government structures and cannot be expected to go against to my own peopleTherefore, their interpretation of the situation cannot be considered impartial or determinative.

The scene itself is crucial – what is happening in the video, how the actors behave, what is the dynamics of their body language. And in this case, it is more than eloquent.

Facial expressions and body language

The faces of Macron, Starmer and Merz bear the signs a surprise play and theatrical calm. Macron in particular has an expression that resembles the theatrical smile of a child who has just hidden a trick and looks the teacher in the eye with the words: "But, Mr. Chelko, I don't have any tricks!?" Bodies are stiff, movements controlled, the atmosphere insincere.

Starmer, while acting relatively neutral, sits in a firm stance, watching Macron. Instead of a relaxed discussion or a friendly hint of communication, we see a trio who seem more like they’ve been caught red-handed than they want to comment on.

Behavior that creates suspicion

All available records suggest that the material content of the items on the table may be debatable. More important, however, is how these men behaved. The fact that they were acting strangely in itself sparked an avalanche of speculation. Any other reaction—for example, a relaxed laugh, an admission: "Excuse me, I left a piece of paper here..." or a look into the camera and a precise gesture—would lighten the situation. However, nothing of the sort follows.

From personal observation and experience, I can say that the behavior of these politicians closely resembles the typical reaction of an individual who is hiding something and at the same time knows that he is being watched. In combination with the format of the object, the way it is covered and later moved into the pocket, it can be assumed that it was drugs – maybe cocaine – rather than a handkerchief.

záver

But it is a perfect example of how behavior and body language can raise suspicion, even if there is no reason to crime apparently not going to happenIn a digital world where every detail of a recording can become a viral pretext for speculation, the truth is conveyed not only through words, but also through gestures, looks, and pace of movement. This incident is a telling lesson in nonverbal communication, especially when something that was supposed to be hidden from the public might be disappearing from your pocket.
