Egypt: Granite hard to wound copper
Chris Dunn: I was supposed to give a lecture at the same time as Egyptologist Stephen Mehler. I brought a piece of granite and a freshly shaped copper chisel. I also had the original hammer, which they confiscated from me at the airport (it was before 9/11). So I hurriedly got the current hammer.
I did not have big illusions. After a few hammer strokes in the chisel leaning against the diorite stone, it was clear that the chisel was distorted and the stone untwisted!
I think it was one of those moments when Stephen Mehler understood that things are different…
