It is a huge underground system of corridors and rooms of unprecedented proportions!

The TT33 complex is located near El-Assasif, part of the Theban Necropolis on the west coast of the Nile, opposite Luxor. This place became the burial place of an Egyptian from ancient times by name Pediamenopet. He was the overseer and supreme priest during 26. dynasty.

Although this complex was discovered in 1737 by Richard Pocock, complex excavation work began much later in 1881 under the leadership of Johannes Dümichen of the University of Strasbourg. (By the way, Richad Pocoke thought he had discovered an underground palace, not a burial place!)

The complex is located near Der el-Bahari. It is definitely much larger complexes than the most famous underground complexes from the necropolis of the Valley of the Kings. The TT33 complex consists of 22 rooms connected by long corridors and the whole is located on three floors up to a depth of 20 meters below ground level.

He who was buried here served one or two rulers from the 25th to 26th dynasties.

The whole complex is covered by hundreds of meters of frescoes and hieroglyphs. There are many rooms that are connected by many staircases, vertical shafts and ramps.

During the years 2004 to 2005, professors Dr. Claude Traunecker and Annie Schweitzer of the University of Strasbourg explored huge chambers with graves. The official reopening was also attended by prominent officials from Egypt's Supreme Council for Monuments and other archaeologists working in the area. Among them is Francesco Tiradritti.

Other planned works will focus on cleaning, restoration and conservation of the complex, where inscriptions with many significant scripts, such as The Book of the Dead.
