The famous pyramids of Giza have taken scientists by surprise with a new mystery. An international team of researchers has discovered unexplained thermal anomalies in the pyramids, the BBC reports, citing Egypt's Ministry of Monuments.

Infrared cameras recorded elevated temperatures at three adjacent stones at the foundations of the Great Pyramid. According to preliminary data from specialists, cavities and air currents inside the pyramid may be the cause of the anomalies. In addition, the devices can detect an elevated temperature even if the material of the stones examined differs from their surroundings. This assumption has already inspired researchers to search for more chambers and secret rooms in the pyramid.

The anomaly was discovered by experts using infrared thermography. Thermovision cameras used in the morning at sunrise, when the rays heated the stones of the pyramid, and the evening when the stones cooled. A particularly severe deviation from normal occurred on the eastern side of the pyramid.

"In the first base row of the pyramid, all the stones are the same, but it was enough to climb higher, and we found three unusual blocks. The thermal anomaly was also captured in the upper half of the pyramid, "said the Minister of Monuments, Dr. Mamdouh Mohamed Gad ElDamaty. Researchers are currently continuing to explore the pyramids as part of a scientific project that will last until the end of next year.
