The mummy named Fred in the Egyptian Museum has changed everything we have ever thought of the Egyptian embalming process. It turned out that the mummy had been embalmed for 1500 years before it was supposed. This means before the embalming of Egyptian pharaohs. This mummy remained untouched for thousands of years. When British scientists decided to explore this mummy closer.

What they found was very surprising. They were most likely to discover the original recipe used in embalming in ancient Egypt. It was supposed that the mummy had been preserved in such great condition due to desert conditions. Scientists have done several chemical analyzes of this approx. 5600 years old mummy and discovered what kinds of substances were used in embalming.

They found the following composition of the substance

  • vegetable oil - probably sesame
  • root extract, which may come from reeds
  • vegetable gum - a natural carbohydrate that can be extracted from acacia
  • evergreen resin - probably pine

Dr. Jane Jones - Egyptologist and expert on ancient Egyptian burial practices says:

"Exploring this mummy has significantly contributed to expanding our knowledge of the prehistoric period and the early practices of mummification. The combination of chemical analysis, visual examination of the body, genetic research, radiocarbon method and microscopic analysis of the flax substance helped us to find out that this ritual mummification process took place around 3600 BC. He is a man aged 20 to 30 years. "

Scientists explain that when mixing the resin with oil, the mummy obtains antibacterial properties to protect it from decomposition.

Study author Stephen Buckley says:

"We have not yet studied the mummy, which would be such a faithful example of the mummification we all know from historical sources."

According to National Geographic, a recently discovered recipe is very similar to that used up to 2500 years before they were Tutanchamon and other Pharaohs prepared for the afterlife.

Chemistry Expert in Archeology Dr. Stephen Buckley says:

"We found a very similar embalming recipe in previous prehistoric burial grounds. This latest study provides the first evidence of a wider geographical spread of this embalmed body preservation technique. We also found the presence of antibacterial components in the same proportions as used in mummification in later times. "

The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Archeological Science.
