No one knew what was hidden under the church. This finds history!

Church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios It was built in 1519 in the Central Mexican city of Cholula on a hill southeast of Mexico City, as the inhabitants of the city were convinced at the time. But they did not know that this imposing structure actually stood on a much more gigantic object.

The Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt is the tallest, but it is not the largest in the world. The largest pyramid stands in Mexico, more precisely in the city of San Andrés Cholula. This ancient building, the base of which is 450 × 450 meters, is very little to be seen, as it is hidden beneath a strong earth layer. 38 churches in the south-eastern city of Cholula have 365 dome - one for each day of the year. At least that's what the legend of the "holy city" says. One of these churches, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, stands on a ridge that has been considered an ordinary hill for centuries.

It was not until one scientist, probably by accident, that an ancient structure was hidden underground under the Temple of God, which eventually turned out to be in its true form as the largest pyramid in the world. This huge structure, which at 4,45 million cubic meters is almost twice as large as the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, was built about 2200 years ago. This pyramid was then built as a temple and used for religious ceremonies. Obviously there were sacrificial ceremonies - human bones were found in the old masonry. According to the online portal "aztec-history.com", children's skeletons are also to be found in the masonry.

The pyramid is not just one separate building, but consists of layers that have been built over several centuries. British BBC news therefore described the pyramid as the interlocking Russian wooden doll Matryoshka. This multi-layered pyramid was an important part of Cholula for many years, but over time it overgrown with wilderness and eventually disappeared beneath the earth. Legend has it that the Aztecs themselves covered the sanctuary of the lands to hide it from intruders and to protect it from possible destruction. However, it is more likely that the Aztecs built another shrine near the pyramid and performed their rituals in the new temple, whereby the great pyramid was deserted and slowly began to disappear in nature, as "Spiegel online" reports.

Whatever the reason, the pyramid had fallen more and more into oblivion over the decades. In 1519, after the Spaniards murdered ten percent of the population of Cholula in one conflict and took over the city, many churches were built, including the "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios". The hill, which was no longer recognizable as a pyramid, offered its suitable location for the construction of the church. Not only was it elevated, but it was also idyllic in front of the Popocatépetl volcano. It was not until 1884 that Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier, an American archaeologist of Swiss origin, discovered a huge shrine here. Scientists have uncovered a tunnel system inside an apparent mountain - and made a terrifying finding. The pyramid was apparently used by the Aztecs for sacrificial rites. Researchers have discovered numerous human bones inside the formation. Numerous tunnels have dark walls.

Today, this terrifying complex under the church attracts hundreds of visitors every day - as a place that has kept buried dark secrets here for centuries. Tunnel labyrinth tours are offered from the north side. Opposite the entrance, a small museum presents finds from inside the pyramid and the reconstruction of several magnificent murals that have been discovered.

A walk through the pyramid takes visitors back in time to the first millennium AD, when Cholula was one of the largest cities in Mexico. But its origins go even further. It is believed that this place with a pleasant climate, lying at an altitude of 2.150 meters, has been inhabited for about 2.500 years. At the site of this bloodshed, which then shook the old Mexican world, now rises the convent of San Gabriel. This monastery church, dating from 500, stands out as a fortress - about 1549 meters from the Great Pyramid. It is one of the oldest churches in Mexico. The massive walls and battlements on the roof suggest that it was intended by its builders - the Franciscan monks - also as a refuge in the event of an uprising.

The new Spanish lords have almost always built their churches on the ruins of pre-Columbian temples to anchor new religions and destroy ancient knowledge. On the large pyramid, which the Franciscans also considered to be a hill, only a small chapel first emerged, and only later a large church. For the Indians newly converted into the church, the monks established a special building next to their monastery church "Capilla Real", which with its 63 domes and many columns resembles a mosque. Today, the bright yellow facade was originally open, as the Indians held their rituals in the open air. The defeated Cholula sailors who felt deserted by their gods quickly adopted the Christian faith. However, they used their ideas to build churches.
