India: The ruined town of Mohendžodaro

The mysterious city, now known as Mohenjodaro (Mohenjo-Daro), has been compared to the earth in a distant past in a single devastating moment.

The remains of the church tell us a terrifying tale of people who have been running out of their homes at the last minute and trying to escape destructive destruction through the streets. However, their failure was unfortunate for some. After many millennia, archaeologists have found their faces to the ground. We can only guess what it was for the people. Some were holding their hands at the last minute. Others embraced. Some have tried to protect their children.

The devastation is to some extent reminiscent of the disaster in Pompeii, where the entire city was covered with ashes from the erupting volcano Mount Vesuvius. In the case of Mohenjodar, there is no suitable volcano within reach that could be the cause. None of the many typical features we know from Pompeii have been found. Some archaeologists believe that the city was destroyed during the nuclear war. Nuclear war (or something that has many similar features to the aftermath of Nagasaki and Hiroshima) is spoken of in ancient Indian texts. Findings of skeletal remains confirm that they were exposed to a much stronger dose of radiation in the distant past than the usual background.
