The new online tool draws on more than 500 aerial photographs taken over the past 000 years. England is home to countless hidden archeological landscapes lasting thousands of years. Now an interactive map published by Historic England allows users to make "virtual flights" over these treasures of the past.

Map of Historic England

The researchers used more than 500 aerial photographs as well as 000D laser scans to build a digital mosaic, which Historic England described as a "huge archaeological puzzle." The online map contains monuments that cover more than half of the country. This new aerial archeology mapping tool allows people to fly virtually across England and fly through many layers of history, ”said Duncan Wilson, CEO of Historic England.

The researchers used aerial photographs and LiDAR surveys to create a 3-D map of England's historic landscape

The most important areas include prehistoric fortifications, medieval agricultural sites with furrows created by ancient plowing, 18th and 19th century coal mining, camps and coastal defenses used during the First and Second World Wars. According to BBC News, the map also shows Roman farms in Yorkshire. Experts identified the ruins after discovering samples created in fields where crops are affected by buried archaeological features during an aerial survey in 2006.

Yorkshire National Park

Images from the Yorkshire Dales National Park, meanwhile, reveal the remains of settlements dating back to the prehistoric period, as well as mine shafts from the medieval period. All of these discoveries will be further explored to ensure that none of them are affected by forthcoming planting plans, and to preserve their archeology for future study.

This image from the Aerial Archeology Mapping Explorer shows two Roman camps near the White Moss in Cumbria.

Each site included in the Historic England map contains a description with links to historical environment records as well as news of important events and new discoveries. The government agency continues to map other regions and more detailed analyzes of known places to find out what hidden history could be revealed. We hope this will provide people with a springboard for further research. Whether for research purposes or simply to satisfy curiosity about the archaeological features they may have noticed around their local area, ”says Wilson in a Historic England statement.
