Archaeologists have uncovered stone blocks and other interesting fragments that make it possible to put together the history of the once magnificent temple dedicated to the sun god Ra in the El-Matariya area of the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis. Heliopolis, which literally means "City of the Sun", was one of the oldest cities in ancient Egypt.

Heliopolis project

Although it is the largest of all ancient Egyptian temples, its constant theft has caused only a small footprint of the temple and the adjacent cemetery to be repaired. In 2012, the Egyptian-German initiative launched the Heliopolis project, which focuses on saving Heliopolis from total oblivion. Their latest finds come from excavations in the central part of the temple. Stone blocks were found at the site of the north and west facades of the temple, as well as an extension of the temple on the north side, which probably connected the shrine of Nactanebo with the main temple of the sun god. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Monuments said several blocks from the Lower Egyptian geographical area had been found, including a scene with the nominee Heliopolis (meaning province or district), while others depict other nomines of Lower Egypt.

Aymen Ashmawy, director of the ancient Egyptian antiques sector, stated that the inscriptions on the blocks mention the royal years 13 and 14 (366/365 BC). From this it can be concluded that it belongs to the reign of King Nactanebo I (379-363 BC), also known as Nakhtnebef - the founder of the 30th dynasty, the last dynasty of the original Egyptian rulers. Several blocks were also unfinished, and no further work seems to have been planned after the death of Nectane or I in 363 BC.

Heliopolis - Discoveries from the entire history of ancient Egypt

However, older architectural elements from the reign of Ramesses II were also discovered. (1279–1213 BC), Merenptaha (1213–1201 BC) and Apriese (589–570 BC). A fragment of a statue of King Seti II. (1204-1198 BC) from the end of the 19th dynasty is also evidence of construction projects in Heliopolis. The continual improvement of this temple of the Sun in Heliopolis shows that for many dynasties and kings, this temple was a very important place that deserved the best care. Thanks to the excavations, it is magical to slowly uncover fragments of history and Egyptian architecture.
