Most people have heard of a lost continent called Atlantis. Some have also heard of the legendary lost continent of Lemuria and the semi-mythical land of Kumari Kandam. But have you heard of the lost continent named Mauritius?

Mauritius

This mainland formed part of Madagascar and India, and scientists claim that the rest of the continent now lies at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. Scientists have now confirmed that the ancient continental crust below the island of Mauritius is a remnant of the collapse of the Gondwana supercontinent, which occurred about 200 million years ago. Gondwana disintegrated into Antarctica, Africa, Australia and South America. There are still some amazing remnants of the supercontinent that can be seen around the world, but much of the story has been obscured by other geological forces.

The discovery of Mauritius is another example of the glory and disintegration of Gondwana. The researchers noted that Mauritius was one of the places with stronger gravity, and a closer examination of some of the zircon crystals on the island's beaches revealed that the crystals were up to 3 billion years old. This is surprising because Mauritius is only 8 million years old. When India and Madagascar began to move away 85 million years ago, the continent of Mauritius began to stretch and disintegrate. As Martin Van Kranendonk of the University of New South Wales in Australia explained: These thin pieces then fall under the ocean. "

More parts of an undiscovered continent

Lead author Lewis Ashwal suggests that there are multiple parts of the "undiscovered continent" in the Indian Ocean, collectively called Mauritius. He said: "According to the new results, this disintegration did not consist in a simple division of the ancient Gondwan supercontinent, but rather a complex division with fragments of continental crust of various sizes that were carried away within the developing continents."
