An abandoned American satellite in space in 1967 began broadcasting again

The satellite, which had been silent for decades, suddenly began transmitting new signals. After such a finding, you may, of course, suspect that the device was hijacked by aliens who are now trying to communicate with Earth. Maybe they want to warn us of a planned invasion!

Such thoughts may have been on the head of Phil Williams, an amateur radio astronomer from Cornwall, England, who was the first person to pick up strange signals in 2013, reminiscent of "ghost sounds." The transmitted messages turned out to come from the abandoned LES1 satellite, but experts needed another three years to verify that it was indeed an American satellite that was "lost" in 1967. LES1 was one of several satellites made and launched into space. from 1965 to 1967 by Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). These devices, designed primarily for testing new satellite communication technology, have been designated LES1 to LES9.

As it turned out, the launch of the first four satellites was not very successful. In particular, LES1 did not meet most of its planned objectives. The connection to the satellite was completely lost two years after its launch, and since then it has traveled around our planet and remained completely out of contact. The launch of the later four units LES5 to LES9 was more successful; The launch of the LES7 satellite was canceled because the program was coming to an end and there were not enough funds for it.

FOREST-1

What a surprise in 2013, when LES1 started transmitting signals repeated every four seconds. According to Phil Williams, signal recovery appears to have caused one of the device components to fail. The signal frequency is 237 MHz. However, a satellite can only send a signal if its solar panels are directly exposed to light. As soon as the vessel's panels fall into the shadow of the satellite's own body, the signal is said to disappear. "The voltage in the solar panels fluctuates and this can cause a phantom signal to be sent," Williams said.

It is probable that the on-board batteries of the satellite are now completely discharged, so it is a bit of a mystery what powers the signal transmission. There is clearly nothing to worry about whether LES1 poses a threat. It's just another piece of space debris orbiting the orbit.

What is even more remarkable is that the electronics used in LES1 and manufactured five decades ago still work relatively well, despite the adverse conditions in space. And fifty years is a very long time in terms of technology and its development.

LES1 was launched more than a decade before Voyager-1 was launched into space to explore outer regions of the solar system. The electronics used in the XNUMXs were much simpler than those of later times, perhaps that is why its durability can be explained.

The news of this outdated satellite, which woke up from nothing after such a long pause, certainly surprised all members of the scientific community. The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral on February 11, 1965. He stopped transmitting signals only two years later. Yet this is not the only case where the satellite has been lost and rediscovered.

It also happened with the much more expensive Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, which disappeared without a trace in 1998. SOHO stopped sending signals during its mission to observe the Sun. NASA astronomers eventually found the lost vessel, which was spinning helplessly in space, and re-established contact with it.

In the case of SOHO, a vessel failure allegedly led to a software defect. The operation of the satellite was eventually completely restored and it then continued its mission. But in the case of LES1, everything seems much stranger and more unexpected, because such an old device has long since fallen into oblivion.
