Today, the Giza pyramids are considered to be world-class. How do we know? In 1881, Flnders Petrie pointed out the extremely precise orientation of the pyramids in Giza according to the world's sides. He performed the measurements using theodolite. After his discovery, there was much speculation about how this phenomenon was achieved at all. Many hypotheses have been made, but few measurements have been made in the last 130 years to examine the matter in more depth. Basically, no one was more concerned with it.

In 2012, archaeologists Clive Ruggles and Erin Nell undertook a week-long intensive study of the pyramid complex. The aim of this research was to determine the orientation of the three main pyramids and their associated buildings. For their measurements, they used the best-preserved sides of the pyramids with the remnants of the original cladding in place of the commonly recognized corners of the pyramids.

Nell and Ruggles found that the pyramids were indeed aligned with great precision according to the world's sides. The difference in north-south orientation between the Great Pyramid and the Middle Pyramid is less than 0 ° 0,5 '. They also found that the edges of the middle pyramid are much more perpendicular than the walls of the Great Pyramid. (This corresponds to the fact that the walls of the Great Pyramids are in fact concave.)

A much more interesting fact is that the west-east direction of the axes of both pyramids is much more accurate than the north-south orientation. For many years, scientists have been debating whether the orientation of the pyramids was based on the circumpolar stars of the northern sky or on the Sun's orbit at noon on the day of the equinox.

According to Nell and Ruggles, the orientation of the pyramids is according to circumpolar stars. According to them, this factor affects the orientation of many other buildings in the area.
