An amateur diver photographed an ancient underwater city 20-25 kilometers away from the coast of the northwestern province of Çanakkale in the Biga region - close to the ancient sites of Priapos and Parion. Fatih Kayrak, also an amateur diver and fisherman, found an amphora and shipwreck in the same place a few months ago. The vessel is believed to date from antiquity. While examining the wreckage of the vessel, he also recorded 8-10 meters below the water surface in the bay of Fırıncık hitherto unknown discoveries, which included, for example, massive columns and sarcophagi.

Discoveries could be part of the temple, near the remains of the ancient cities of Priapos and Parion. Historians claim that Parion was the coastal city of the Roman Empire.

"We believe that there was a very intensive maritime trade in this area during the Roman Empire. These recent discoveries confirm our assumption, "said Professor Vedat Keleş, head of excavations in the ancient city of Parion.

Keleş said the pillars and sarcophagi could be transported by a vessel operating on the Marmara Island.

"This could be an unknown ancient city. We can only find out by examining the visible details. We'll make it clear when underwater archaeologists explore the site, "he adds.

In recent years, the area surrounding the site has become a topic of debate for thermal power plant construction projects. The area in which the discoveries were made was designated as a port construction area.

The co-ordinates of the remains were now sent to the Bodrum Underwater Archaeological Museum, asking for this area to be taken under protection, as the remains could otherwise be completely hidden during the construction of the port.
