Breit and Wheeler argued that it should be possible to convert light into matter by colliding with just two particles of light (photons) to create an electron and a positron - the simplest way to convert light into matter. The calculation was found to be theoretically correct, but Breit and Wheeler said they did not expect anyone to physically prove their prediction. This transformation has not yet been observed in laboratories, and previous experiments to verify it have required the addition of massive high-energy particles.
