The Yaguas National Reserve is located in Peru in the Amazon Plain and includes an extremely rich biotope. It is an important contribution to the protection of species and climate, as some non-environmental ecologists call it. Yaguas is located in the Iquitos region of northeastern Peru. The area is part of the Amazon Plain, it is very heavily accessible and extremely rich in animal species: thousands of different species of animals and species have been confirmed here. Among them are the Brazilian dolphin (river), the huge otter, the siren (cabbage), the jaguar and the lobster. It is named after the Yagua River, which originates here and flows into the Putumayo River.

A huge step for nature

Thanks to the extraordinary species diversity and exceptional nature, the Peruvian government has now declared this area as a national park. In the national park, the rainforest area "Zona Reservada Yaguas" with an area of 8.700 square kilometers, which is four times more than the area of all national parks on the German mainland together.

Yaguas National Park is the 15th National Park in Peru and one of 76's state-protected nature reserves. "Yaguas National Park is an excellent contribution to climate protection and biodiversity. This is a grandiose step to protect nature in Peru. Since 2015, the Frankfurt Zoo has been supporting the Peruvian Conservation Authority financially and logistically, while improving the protection of the Yaguas and accelerating the process of transformation from the "Zona Reservada" to a national park. It was very exciting for us to be at birth, and we will continue to help with the newborn baby of important protected areas in Peru."Says Christof Schenck of the Frankfurt Zoological Society.

Indigenous Initiative Initiative

Yaguas National Park is uninhabited, but many surrounding communities and communities depend on the water resources of this ecosystem, especially on fish. That's why protecting the area is vital to their survival. "At the request of neighboring villages, the national park returns them. They know the park protects their livelihood, "says Schenck. The current decision was preceded by a one-year bargaining process, in which 23 advocated surrounding villages to transform the Yaguas reservation "Zona Reservada Yaguas" into a national park.

Municipalities such as Ampiyacu, Medio and Bajo Putumayo even called on the Peruvian state in 2017 to helped prevent the illegal extraction of wood and gold in the threatened Yaguas by announcing this area to the National Parkm. Representatives of 23 villages and communities in June 2017 reminded us of the need to protect Yaguas "because we consider this place to be holy, important for animal and plant conservation and because we want Yaguas without any illegal activities." The Peruvian Ministry of the Environment has consequently led to a participatory and democratic process of consultation involving all the communities and communities concerned.
