These Spa Hammam Al-Ayn were built year 1336. In the middle of 20. century were closed because of their poor condition. After restoration they were now reopened. It offers visitors the opportunity to indulge in a steam bath and other spa treatments in the original premises.

Last of its kind

This spa house originally served to Muslim pilgrims who wanted to engage in ritual washing before praying at the nearby al-Aqsa Mosque. He also served traders and local residents, who were routinely washed here. Once the water was distributed to the individual households, the interest in the spa was significantly reduced until they were finally 20. century closed. Al-Ayn is the only preserved spa house. Another Al-Shifa spa house has been transformed into a cultural space where cultural events and exhibitions are held.

Arnan Basheer - Director of the Center for the Development of the Universities of Jerusalem says:

"The reopening of the spa is very important, it is the only way to preserve this cultural heritage. If we didn't repair the spa, it would fall apart and we would lose part of history. "

A place to socialize

The design and layout of the spa has not changed. However, modern equipment has been added to make it possible to use electric lighting and showers. The spa uses mostly rainwater, which is stored in tanks and natural spring water. Visitors can relax here and hold meetings while waiting for treatments. Another intention is to provide spa facilities for social gatherings and cultural events.

Arnan Basheer says:

"In the past, this spa house played a very important social role. We wish to keep this. The old town does not have many spaces where meetings and cultural events could be held. "

Known design

The spa includes several domes of various sizes that allow light to pass through the stained glass windows. They work on a similar principle to the Damascus spa. So it is likely that the spa builders came from Syria. Other excavations during the renovation revealed another spa house that was connected to the Al-Ayn Spa. Ruins of other spas were discovered near the synagogue. So the spa complex was probably connected and much bigger than we think.

Century architecture

Most of the original stone and tile work is untouched, so spa guests can sit on centuries-old stone benches while enjoying the couples and admire the architectural details such as large arches and floors decorated with colorful marble star patterns.

The way to the restaurant was long. Renovation plans have already been presented in 80. years, but lacking funds. With the implementation of the project, the European Union has helped in the Jerusalem Cultural Heritage Project. The renovation took a total of 5 years and was overseen by the Israeli office.

An economic asset

The spa house project also included the expansion of the nearby Cotton Merchants Market with a sophisticated gate that separates the shopping area from the famous Al-Aqsa Mosque. This marketplace still works today, we can buy sweets, souvenirs, prayer rugs, and similar practical things.
