The oldest known crown in the world, which was famously discovered in 1961 as part of Nahal Mishmar Hoard, was recently unveiled along with other artifacts at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World of New York University.

Ancient crown

The ancient crown dates back to the copper age between 4000-3500 BC and is just one of more than 400 artifacts obtained in a cave in the Judean Desert near the Dead Sea more than half a century ago. The crown has the shape of a ring, we find a depiction of vultures and doors on it. These symbols are believed to have played a role in funeral rites. The valuables were found by archaeologist Pessah Bar-Adon. They were hidden in a natural crevice and wrapped in straw in a cave on the north side of Nahal Mishmar, which became known as the "Treasure Cave." Among the 442 valuable artifacts made of copper, bronze, ivory and stone we find 240 mace heads, 100 scepters, 5 crowns, horns, tools and weapons.

The carbon in the reed mat in which the items were packed suggests that the valuables are at least 3500 BC. social progress in the region. Copper was probably mined in Wadi Feynan, which is nearby.

Given the site, it was believed to be the treasures of the abandoned Ein Gedi Temple, which is about 12 kilometers away. The treasures could have been hidden in the cave during times of emergency. The remains of more than 20 individuals were also found in the cave. These were members of the chalcolitic population who became refugees and died under tragic circumstances (blood was found on the spot and individuals were often mortally wounded).

Real purpose and origin of the treasure but it still remains mystery.
