In a new study, French scientists analyzed fragments of Adolf Hitler's teeth to prove that he died in 1945 after taking cyanide and shooting himself in the head. Research published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine in May 2018 aims to end the conspiracy theories about his death through a scientific analysis of the dictator's teeth and skull.

Studies and their results

"Our study proves that Hitler died in 1945," Philippe Charlier, the study's lead author, told AFP. "The teeth are authentic, no doubt about that."

Although it is common knowledge that Hitler died in his bunker in Berlin, there are still rumors of his escape. New research proves that "he did not escape in a submarine to Argentina, he is not on a hidden base in Antarctica or on the far side of the moon," Charlier said.

When Soviet forces attacked Berlin at the end of April 1945, Hitler prepared plans for suicide, including testing cyanide capsules supplied by the SS on his wolfhound Blondi and dictating last will and testament. Two days earlier, Mussolini had been shot dead by an execution squad and then publicly hanged by the legs on the outskirts of Milan, Italy - a similar fate seemed inevitable.

A little later, on April 30, the bodies of Hitler and his new wife, Eva Braun, were found in the bunker. Hitler's head was covered with a bullet.

Teeth inspection

In April 2018, a publication of the memory of a Russian interpreter in English revealed that in 1945 she had been entrusted with a set of teeth. Her task was to cross-check them with the dictator's dental records. The teeth coincided and have remained in Russian hands ever since, the Telegraph reported.

After months of negotiations, Russia's FSB and Russia's state archives have allowed scientists to examine a fragment of Hitler's skull and pieces of his teeth. A piece of the skull had a hole on the left side with black charred edges, identical to a bullet. Although the researchers were not allowed to take samples from the skull, they noted in the study that its shape appeared to be "completely comparable" to X-rays of Hitler's skull taken a year before his death.

Terrible quality

The horrific images of the teeth, published in the study, show a jaw made mostly of metal. "At the time of death," they wrote in the report, "Hitler had only four remaining teeth." The other few teeth are disfigured, browned at the root, and tainted with white tartar.

The analysis confirmed the oft-cited claims that Hitler was a vegetarian, but failed to convincingly demonstrate whether cyanide had been ingested before the shot. The researchers wrote that the bluish deposits on his false teeth suggest a number of different hypotheses - did there be a chemical reaction between his false teeth and cyanide at the time of death, during cremation, or when the remains were buried? Without sampling for analysis, it is difficult to say for sure. "We didn't know if the death was caused by a cyanide ampoule or a bullet in the head. Most likely both, "said Charlier.

Either way, the study may contribute to the definitive end of speculation about Hitler's escape.
