A well-preserved slave room was discovered at Villa Civita Giuliana, a affluent suburb of Pompeii, located about 700 meters (2296,59 feet) northwest of the city walls.

This large villa was explored in 2017, but has been looted by treasure hunters in recent years. In 2021, a ceremonial chariot and a stable containing the remains of three horses were discovered at this place. Now, according to archaeologists, the discovery of the slave room offers a glimpse into a not-so-pleasing area of history. And that area is the daily brutality of slave life.

Plundering of ancient wealth

Pompeii, located in the Campania region of southern Italy, was built on the active volcano Vesuvius. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius burned and buried the entire region. In the recent past, many monuments and rooms have been found that will shed more light on life in Pompeii. The discoveries also include a slave room. But even in the discovery of this room, we can see a high historical value. However, it was reduced thanks to tunnels made by grave robbers. It is estimated that the total amount of damage in the whole villa over the years is almost 2 million euros ($ 2,3 million).

Slave room

A small room with an area of only 16 square meters is a cross between a hostel and a warehouse. The room was lit only by a small upper window, three beds were discovered, and a wooden chest containing metal and cloth objects that looked like parts of a horse harness. Eight large amphorae (storage vessels) and a "chamber pot" were also discovered under the beds and at their ends.

The beds were made of wooden planks, which could be adjusted to suit different heights of sleepers. The undersides were made of rope mesh, a detail that can be seen from the imprints of the cords in the cinerite under the beds. Two of the beds measured 1,7 meters in length and the other was only 1,4 meters long. It is not clear whether a group of slaves or a small family lived in the room. The little space left in the room was used to store containers of wine, fruit, spices and other groceries.

A much greater force that destroys the division of society

Pompeii was the center of elite farmers and merchants. They lived in the belief that in Pompeii they could live safely on the edge of a geological monster. However, when the eruption took place in 79 AD, the traditional division of society was immediately destroyed. There has been a recognition and realization that both merchants and their slaves together face much greater power than money or social status.
